Greg was born July 1, 1939 in Stadtlohn, Germany. He was the eighth child of Wilhelm and Maria Herbers Gertz. He came to the United States of America in July of 1962, and he married Mary Kaye Robison on July 18, 1964. Greg became a U.S. citizen in 1968.

Greg first worked for Hubbuch in Kentucky as a decorator and upholsterer. He later owned and operated several businesses of his own in Southern Indiana, including most recently, Gertz Seating & Upholstery in New Albany. Greg was a long-time member of Howard Park Christian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and church board chairman. He lived in Clarksville, IN for 38 years, and then he and Mary Kaye moved to the Lanesville-Georgetown area. Greg was proud of his German heritage, but he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. Greg and Mary Kaye celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelm and Maria Gertz; brothers, Engelbert, Josef, Franz and Wilhelm; sisters - Mathilde Heselhaus and Maria Terhune.
